“Joe” Mavian was the second child of Karekin and Perous Mavian. He was born in Brantford Ontario, Canada. His siblings were Zorek, Dick, Doris and Mike. He graduated from high school at the age of 16, then went to work as a pipefitter apprentice. He was drafted into the Canadian Army in 1943. Joe loved all sports and played basketball, baseball and ran track while in high school. He especially loved baseball. In fact, he was scouted by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1946 and spent time with the team at their training camp in Florida. He returned to Canada and moved to Windsor with his family. He met his beloved wife Dorothy, and after a brief courtship, were married in 1948. They moved to Detroit where Joe started his career at Ford Motor Company, first as a pipefitter then later as a supervisor. They had two children; Gary (deceased) and JoAnne. Joe retired from Ford and enjoyed spending winters in Florida, traveling, golfing, bowling, playing cards, reading and spending time with family and friends. He dearly missed Dorothy, his wife of 66 years, who preceded him in death in 2014.
