Obituary for John Aghababian

John Aghababian, 81, of Livonia, Mich., passed away peacefully Oct. 4, 2016, of natural causes at Landings of Genesee Valley in Flint, Mich. He was born April 24, 1935, in Detroit, Mich., the son of Nishan Aghababian and Mariam Mouradian, both Armenian immigrants who escaped the Turkish massacres of the early 1900s.

John gave his heart to Jesus in junior high and committed his life to serving, as a deacon of Trinity Baptist Church and on various boards of Alpha Baptist Church both in Livonia, for many years. He was a stagehand and sound technician for Voice of Christian Youth (VCY) for 10 years, where he met and married the ‘prettiest girl in town,” Ruth Cranga.

In 1953, he graduated from Cass Tech High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in El Paso, Texas, while studying as a guided missile and electronic technician. He then taught missile and electronics repair to the Detroit area National Guard for two years.

John began his lifelong career of repairing pipe and electronic organs. He serviced organs throughout the Detroit area for 17 years with Hammond Organ Company and later operated his own company for 27 years and serviced Allen Organs through Smiley Brothers and Evola Music. Some of his more notable accounts were Tiger Stadium, COBO Hall, Masonic Temple, Barry Manilow and Kid Rock.

When he wasn’t servicing organs John enjoyed woodworking, making everything from small to large, including birdhouses, mailboxes, dining tables, cribs and highchairs for his grandchildren. He always had a joke or funny anecdote to share, and was know for his quick wit, sense of humor, huge smile and hearty laugh.

His is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth Cranga Aghababian and together they were blessed with three children; son Paul (Laura) Aghababian of Fenton, Mich., son Nishan (Chihiro) Aghababian of Hopewell, N.J., daughter Sharon (Mark) Pape of Pinedale, Wyo., 12 grandchildren Amanda and Nicholas Aghababian; Anoush, Aznive, Anahys, Azad and Aram Aghababian; Mark, Stephanie, Jennifer, Olivia and Mitchell Pape; and two great-grandchildren; brother Sarkis (Sam) Aghababian; and sister Anna Aghababian. He is preceded in death by his parents, Nishan and Mariam Aghababian.
