Obituary for Jose O. Mangune

Jose O. Mangune got his wings on May 6, 2020 at the age of 69. He was born in Matina, Davao City, Philippines. He moved to Michigan at the age of 23 as an American citizen after graduating from Ateneo College in Davao City. He was also known as Ben or Benny to family and friends because all his brothers are legal named is Jose, so they all have other names they go by too.

He worked at General Motors while going to Wayne State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Recreation. Over the years he worked at the Birmingham YMCA, Livonia YMCA, Youth Living Centers/Starfish Family Services and Gaudior Academy.

He got involved in ASSE Student Exchange Program which start his passion for helping international students to study Michigan and learn American culture. He inspired families to open up their hearts and homes to students from other countries and enriched their lives as well. He/we were, and are, host families to countless boys which enriched our lives and theirs.
Jose/Ben loved to travel. In the summer he’d go back to the Philippines to visit friends and family. Then make other stops to China, Japan, Thailand and countless other places to spend time with past and current students and families. Brad and I travelled on one of the trips to the Philippines which created priceless memories.

Jose loved soccer and enjoyed coaching and training many teams over the years.
He truly will be missed. Jose was always there for others and asked for nothing in return. For many years he was their mentor, a roll model. Teaching basics of life like how to treat people and be respectful, how to communicate with people and listen.

He believed in people and gave everyone a chance to let them know their potential and push them to be the best version of themselves. He wasn’t one to give up on others, or pass judgment, only to seek to understand. So full of life, a very deep love for his family and many friend and acquaintances over the years. Instilling others with love and life values.

Jose had the gift to bring joy, laughter and smiles to everyone. There was never a dull moment around him. A great dancer too! He loved life!

He was the eighth child in their family of nine siblings: Jing Santos, Joselyn Santiago, Corky (Elsie) Mangune, Evalyn Babao, Baibo Mangune, Raynaldo (Veronica) Mangune, LynnMay Aghili and Mario (Susan) Mangune.

Loving husband of Karen Mangune

Loving father to Bradley Mangune

He will be missed by countless nieces, nephews and friends.

There will be a “Celebration of His Live” at a later date.
