Obituary for Lieutenant Colonel Freida J. Williams United States Army Ret.

Lieutenant Colonel Freida J. Williams, United States Army Ret., passed away on September 23, 2020 at the age of 88.

Beloved daughter of the late Greenberry and the late Mary Elizabeth.

Cherished aunt of Paul Gregory Williams, Sandra K. Williams, Dennis M. (Stephanie D.) Williams and Jeanettte E. Williams.

Dear great-aunt of Michael T. and Brenden S. Williams.

Loving sister of the late Donald Williams and the late David Thomas (Phyllis) Williams.

Visitation Friday, October 2, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Salvation Army Royal Oak Citadel 3015 N. Main Street, Royal Oak.

In state Saturday, October 3, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Funeral Service.

Interment and Military Honors to follow at Oakview Cemetery, Royal Oak.

In lieu of flower memorial donations are to Wounded Warrior Project or Salvation Army.

LTC Freida J Williams, U.S. Army, Ret. joined the Salvation Army Church as a young girl, and was an active member from the first time she stepped foot into the Pontiac Corps. She enjoyed the band and soon started to learn to play. She played several instruments including the cornet, alto horn, piano and was learning to play the guitar. In 1991 Freida became the Band Master at the Pontiac Corp. She was a senior soldier for over 50 years. She attended both the Pontiac Corps and the Royal Oak Corps, with the Royal Oak Corps becoming her home. She actively volunteered at the Corps, when needed, and of course played in the band until her health no longer allowed her to participate. She has many great friends at the Corps and loved everyone with all her heart.

After graduating from Pontiac High School, Freida went on to Wayne State University, while working full time for General Motors. She graduated from Wayne State University in 1963 with a Bachelor’s Degree. Freida was a member of Phi Theta Kappa Society. She continued her education throughout her life, achieving a Master of Science degree in 1974 from Jackson State University, Jacksonville, AL. She also earned several Associates Degrees from Oakland Community College after retiring from the United States Army.

Freida joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve while attending Wayne State University. After graduating, she became commissioned as an officer into the Unites States Army and made that her career, serving 26 years in the U.S. Military. She was stationed twice in Germany, and stationed at serval bases throughout the U.S. including Fort Lee, VA, Fort McClellan, AL, and Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN. Freida served as an Army Quarter Master and later as an instructor at the Adjutant General School. She had a long and distinguished career in the U.S. Military, finally retiring in 1979, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Freida’s love of skiing started while stationed in Germany. She would go on to teach her brother and 4 nieces and nephews how to ski. After retirement, she traveled with her father all over the Unites States and parts of Europe to ski. Freida also enjoyed art and photography and won several awards for both.

Freida lived life to the fullest and honored God in all she did. She is fondly remembered with love and tears of joy celebrating a life well lived.
