Obituary for Mihran Kupelian

MIHRAN MICHAEL KUPELIAN passed away on Monday, November 16, 2020 at the age of 91.

Mihran was born March 31, 1929 in the Amiantos Village of Cyprus to the late Avedis & Rofig (Keshishian) Kupelian. Cherished brother of Harout (Georgette) Kupelian and Krikor (Rita) Kupelian, and treasured nephews Alec Kupelian and Barret Kupelian. Mihran is preceded in death by his wife Marie and brother Haig Kupelian.

Always a scholar, Mihran came to the United State to continue his education. His dedication to learning and helping others do the same led him to a career as a teacher with Waterford Public Schools. Loyal to his community, he also hosted “Michigan Spotlight” a local cable show that brought together people, perspectives and trivia while displaying his kind-hearted nature. When he wasn’t in front of the camera, Mihran would sit pen to paper writing about historical occurrences, current events, crafting fictional stories or drafting articles, all of which allowed him to flex his creative muscle. He could often be found discussing the art of storytelling and their shared connection to Wayne State University in Detroit, with his late cousin Vartan Kupelian.

Mihran had a passion for his Armenian heritage and culture and served as an active member of Knights of Vartan and on committees with the Armenian General Benevolent Union. His love for music was boundless, and he never missed an opportunity to dance especially when ballroom tunes or Armenian songs were playing.

Mihran enjoyed travel and looked forward to visiting family in Cyprus where he reminisced about his childhood. He had a most memorable trip to Armenia with his late cousin Sarkis Kupelian and friends representing a delegation from Metro Detroit, where they met up with more Kupelian family members living in the homeland.

A most gentle man, the only thing he did with force were the tight hugs he gave to those he loved. No matter what he was doing his smile could light up a room, allowing his genuine spirit to come shining through. He will be missed by many loving friends and family members in Michigan including Betty, Lisa Anahid, Peter, Kathy, Lauren & Pierce Kupelian as well as family from around the globe.

A private service will be held this week, with a memorial gathering to take place at a later date. May his soul rest in peace.

Mihran’s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory be made to St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church (Dearborn, MI).
