Obituary for The Honorable Y. Gladys Barsamian

Age 84. Beloved sister of Araxey Barsamian, Y. Patsy (Grover) Rodgers, Leona Asher and Elizabeth Barsamian. Loving aunt of Dr. Armen (Dr. Vartouhi) Asherian and Lisa Ani (Ron) Schlesinger. Cherished great-aunt of Naree and Araz. Dear friend of Dr. Rose M. Berberian. Gladys will be missed by many cousins, relatives and dear friends. Visitation Friday 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. Prayer Service at St. John's Armenian Church 22001 Northwestern Highway, Southfield. In state Saturday 10:00 a.m. until the Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flower donations in Gladys's memory are to St. John's Armenian Church or the A.G.B.U. Alex & Marie Manoogian School. Judge Barsamian, since birth, was an active parishioner of St. John's Armenian Church, a former Sunday School Teacher and a faithful member of A.C.Y.O.A. She was a Wayne County Probate Judge, assigned to the Juvenile Division, since January, 1975. Presiding Judge of the Division for six years (1982-1997) as well as Chief Judge Pro Tempore for two years (1985-1987). Judge Gladys retired from Probate Bench in January of 1993. Some of her achievements were developing the Wayne County Juvenile Justice Plan, initiated Youth Assistance Program and developed intensive Probation Program. Before election to the Probate bench, she ��practiced law in downtown Detroit for seventeen years. She attended Detroit Public Schools, graduating from Cass Technical High School. Judge Barsamian graduated from Wayne State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor Degrees. She was the Chairperson and member of many committee, such as Juvenile Law Committee, State Bar of Michigan, Probate/Juvenile Benchbook Committee, Michigan Supreme Court, Michigan Juvenile Law Sourcebook Committee, Task Force on the Role of the Probate Court in the Delivery of Services to Children and Families, State Bar of Michigan, Past President of Women Lawyers Association of Michigan and Michigan Probate Judges Association. She was on the Board of Directors of Metropolitan Detroit Youth Foundation, Downtown YMCA, Michigan Association for Emotionally Disturbed Children, Women's Economic Club (Past President, 1982-1983), Catholic Youth Organization and United Community Services. Judge Barsamian was Honored by the YWCA of Metropolitan Detroit as one of its "Women in Perspective" in 1981.
