Violet Varsenig Der Manulian was born in Hamilton, Ontario on March 21, 1926 to Hagop and Shoushanig Torosian. She was one of four children; her siblings were John (Hagop), Arthur “Ace” Ararat, and her baby sister Josephine. Her brother John pre-deceased her parents and siblings … making Violet the eldest among them and as with many immigrant families she was responsible for being the interpreter and managing their family’s affairs. Their home was filled with love and laughter and fierce loyalty to one another. The family moved from Hamilton to Windsor where Violet graduated from high school. Like her mother, she was incredibly intelligent, strong, vibrant, loved life, and was fiercely protective of her family.

Upon graduation, she worked for various companies but found the most rewarding position as a personal legal secretary for Leonard Hyman. She was so well respected for her intelligence and she flourished within the legal world. During that time she became very good friends with two of the associate attorneys, Senator Carl Levin and Congressman Sander Levin. She then went on to continue her career as a legal secretary at Honigman until she retired.

Violet married the love of her life Samuel (Seragan) Der Manulian on August 25, 1951, they then moved to Detroit. Their family was complete with the birth of their two children, Mark and Kim. Their home was the source of many a celebratory dinner that was filled with the love of family and dear friends that became family. Violet and Sam were married for 55 years. Their loving children married: Mark to Dawn, Kim to Ed, and blessed them with their four beloved grandchildren, Jonathan Browalski, Arianna, Mark, and Anthony Der Manulian, and great-granddaughter Laura Browalski. She was totally in love with each of them and celebrated their achievements, encouraged them, and was a cheerleader for every aspect of their lives. Of course … she also gave wise counsel, she was the teacher and we were her students. She loved and adored each of her nieces and nephews and all of their children, she was Mokor to the Kalustians’, Dores’ and Menzos’, Horkor to the Torosians’ and Markeys’, and Aunt Vi to the Khederians’ and Ohanians’. She loved her friends and her children’s friends so deeply that she then made them part of her family. She would envelop each of them with her love. She had a beautiful sense of style; she loved family dinners, following the stock market and politics, crossword puzzles and card games with family and friends, dancing, and anything that was a celebration of life. Violet made another set of friends later in life after Sam insisted she become involved in the Senior Lunches at St John … the friendships, the lunches, the card games brought a second grouping of friends that made both her and Sam’s later years complete. Violet was fiercely independent, spirited, joyous, loving, and compassionate. She had a zest for life and she embraced it purposefully.
