Obituary for Zabel Arakelian

Zabel (Gononian) Arakelian passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 27, 2016. She was born on October 6, 1923, in Highland Park, MI to the late Yesahi and Armenoohi Gononian.

She was a loving wife to George Arakelian for 70 years and the mother of four children, Helen Knar (Michael) Cirrito, George Vartan Arakelian, Christine (Stepan) Kanarian, and Paul (Sema) Arakelian. She was blessed with seven grandchildren: Andrea Cirrito, Michael Cirrito, Gregory Kanarian, Marcus (fiancee Diane Wetmore) Arakelian, Stephen Arakelian, Anoush Arakelian, and Armen Arakelian.
Zabel was the second of three children. She is predeceased by her brother Albert Vartkes, and her sister Sara (Sarkis) Hamamjian and is survived by sister-in-law, Ida Gononian. Zabel has 4 nieces and one nephew, many cousins and several godchildren. She is pre-deceased by her nephew, John Gononian.

Zabel graduated in 1941 from Highland Park High School and attended Highland Park Junior College and Wayne State University. During World War II, she worked in several factories in support of the war effort.

Zabel was a longtime member of St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church and the Armenian Relief Society. She was a founding member of the Armenian Renaissance Association. During the early years of St. Sarkis Church, she taught in the Sunday School and in the late 1950's, she supported her husband who was on the church's Building Committee. She was a good and faithful servant and daughter of the Armenian Church.

Zabel was an accomplished and well respected embroiderer and needle worker. She was a longtime member of the Embroiderer's Guild of America and taught classes and seminars in various needlework and beading techniques. She was a wonderful cook and a gracious hostess. She had a warm and generous personality and was loved by many friends and family members.

She was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren. She and George were loving partners who were dedicated to each other, their family and their community.

Visitation Sunday, May 1, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service at St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church 19300 Ford Rd., Dearborn.

In state Monday, May 2, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Funeral Service at church.

Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery (Holly, MI).

In lieu of flower donations in Zabel's memory are to St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church or Armenian Renaissance Association.
