Dr. Haig Der Garabedian, D.D.S. Age 93, December 22, 2014. Beloved husband of Dorothy; father of Jim Derian (Genya), Lisa Kuchera (Jerry) and Peter (Sue) Garabedian; grandfather of Josh, Sam, Sarah, Jacob, Rachel, Van, Lora and Zachery. Haig was a man for all seasons. He was a pioneer in the development of Implant Dentistry. He was a Fellow and Diplomat in The American Academy of Implant Dentistry, American Board of Oral Implantology, International Congress of Oral Implantology, and a charter member of the International Congress of Laser Dentistry. Haig was a third year aeronautical engineering student when he was drafted into the army during WWII. He was a paratrooper in the 13th Airborne Division, serving in a glider unit. After the war, with the aid of the GI Bill, he attended the University of Detroit Dental School. Haig was energetic and multi-talented. In addition to being a gifted athlete and distinguished dental practitioner, he was an accomplished violinist, having studied for many years with DSO concertmaster Carl Chase. Haig was the first chair violinist in all of the orchestras he played in, including the Northwestern High School Orchestra, the Detroit All-City Orchestra and the Michigan Youth Orchestra. Among his many other gifts he loved to write and was a storyteller. He had an immense capacity for love and was deeply devoted to his family and friends. Haig is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jemal Garabedian, his sweetheart of 63 years, his three children, eight grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends. He is survived by his brother-in-law Alex Jemal Jr. (Lily) and predeceased by his brother Levon (Joanne) LeVon and his niece Linda LeVon Stieler. The family would also like to thank Haig's caregivers, Alice Coleman, Latoya Ellis and Monica Ellison for the exceptional and loving care that they provided to him in his time of need. There will be visitation on Friday January 16 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Edward Korkoian Funeral Home, 836 N. Main Street, Royal Oak 48067. A memorial service with military honors will take place at the Korkoian Funeral Home on Saturday January 17 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a memorial lunch at the Iroquois Club in Bloomfield Hills. Donations in lieu of flowers are requested for the First Presbyterian Church of Farmington at 26165 Farmington Road, Farmington Hills, Mi. 48334 or the Armenian General Benevolent Union.
