Makruhi Civelek Obituary

Makrik Civelek, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away on October 10, 2022 following a long battle with illness. She was born March 15, 1936 in Istanbul, Turkey. She married Mihran in 1957, moved to the US in 1969 and they became invaluable members of the Armenian community in Detroit.

After the untimely passing of Mihran on May 20, 1994, Makrik dedicated herself to her family and community. A long time member of CSAI, Makrik loved to be involved in the social and cultural life of the Armenian community, cherished her heritage, and aspired to pass on the traditions by often reminding the younger generation “Orenken turs paner mi inek”.

She was particularly fond of the Armenian cuisine and lovingly cooked and baked as often as possible. Her infamous “dolma” and “topik” will be missed greatly but she is sure to share her love of the Armenian cuisine with everyone she meets in heaven. Makrik is survived by her daughter Sirarpi and son-in-law, Mike Gobelian; her son Bedros and daughter-in-law, Suzi Civelek; her 4 grandchildren, Hera and husband Romik, Nazan and fiancé Arek, Justin, and Kristen; her 2 great grandchildren, Emma and Lucas; and her nephews and nieces.

All of these she loved and touched deeply as Mama and Mamino.

A private family funeral service was held at St John’s Armenian Church, Southfield, MI followed by interment at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit, MI.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cultural Society of Armenians from Istanbul (CSAI) and mailed to 22001 Northwestern Hwy, Southfield, MI 48075 or the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org/donate).
