Melina Fayroian Obituary

Melina (Krikorian) Fayroian was born January 25, 1926 in Detroit to Ohannes and Verkin Krikorian, Armenian Genocide survivors who made America home with their daughter and two sons Mike and George. Melina attended Detroit Southwestern High School while also caring for her family and helping the WW2 effort by assembling tail sections for B-24 bombers and clerking at Fort Wayne. Following the war, word of Melina’s movie-star beauty and independent spirit reached the New York City Armenian diaspora and the ears of soldier Arthur Fayroian, who elbowed suitors off the Krikorian doorstep, wisely, in uniform. Soon after, Melina married the luckiest veteran alive, with whom she raised and loved five children: Sherry Seroun, Debra Gamar, Barbara Maro, Cynthia Annahid and Peter Bedros. Melina was a 45-year resident of Livonia, Michigan, a fine tennis player and founding member of the nation’s first indoor YMCA facility, and loved the outdoors, particularly Dunham Lake with her family. It’s no wonder, then, that she dragged her husband to Florida to live for a short time, and equally unsurprising that she pulled him back up to be closer to family. Melina instilled a passion for classical music in her children and was a proud patron of all her children’s orchestras, from Livonia Youth to the Detroit Symphony. She loved card games and social events with her girlfriends as much as beating her grandchildren at tavloo (backgammon) and parcheesi. Inheriting the travel bug from her mother, she loved visiting new places and scenery, most recently with her daughter Sherry. Melina died on February 10th, peacefully, after weeks of frivolity and being doted upon by three generations. She is predeceased by her husband of 67 years Arthur Fayroian, by daughters Barbara Fayroian (Roger Roth) and Cindi Fayroian (Robert Watson), and brother George Krikorian. Melina is survived and cherished by children Sherry Fayroian, Debra Fayroian (Wesley Jacobs), and Peter Fayroian; grandchildren Kreg and Keith Khezarjian (Jeannie), Michael Baptista (Trinady), Adrienne Jacobs Ronmark (Erik), Matthew and Kimberly Watson, and Sofia and Byron Fayroian; her great-grandchildren Annika, Karl and Liv Ronmark, Grace and Jak Khezarjian, Katie and Ben Khezarjian, and great-great-grandchild Logan; her brother Mike Krikorian.  A Memorial Visitation will be held 11:30 on Saturday, February 24th in the St. Vartan’s Room of St. John’s Armenian Church 22001 Northwestern Highway, Southfield followed by a Hokehankist (Requiem) Service at 12:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary of St. John Armenian Church.  A Memorial Meal will follow the Service.  Contributions can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in lieu of flowers.
