Shirley Jean (Winter) Morse Obituary
Shirley Jean (Winter) Morse (1934-2026)
Shirley Jean Morse, aged 91, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026. Known for her fierce independence, Shirley faced health challenges that began to slow her down at 89. After a brief recovery, she suffered a stroke and left this world the following day, surrounded by her loving sons, with whom she shared heartfelt final goodbyes.
Born December 9, 1934, in Pontiac, Michigan, Shirley was the daughter of Frank and Jean (Moore) Winter. After graduating from Royal Oak High School, she attended the Edward Sparrow Hospital School of Nursing in Lansing, Michigan. After 1 year, George Morse proposed and they wed in 1955. She chose to dedicate herself to raising their two children, setting aside her earlier aspiration of becoming a nurse. Shirley and George shared nearly 48 years of marriage before his passing.
Shirley was a longtime member of Southfield Presbyterian Church. After its closing, she found a welcoming new home at First Presbyterian Church of Farmington.
Shirley was active in several organizations and had a special interest in genealogy. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and had previously served as Regent of the Ezra Parker Chapter. She had also served on the Board of Assistants for the Society of Mayflower Descendants of Michigan. She also once held the position of Chaplain for the Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America, Michigan Chapter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George, and her stepsister, Marilyn (Wagner) Head.
Shirley is survived by her sons, Derek A. Morse and David G. Morse as well as her nine nieces and nephews and their offspring.
Shirley will be remembered for her quiet strength (she beat cancer three times), her devotion to family, and her deep faith. She took great joy in researching her family history, supporting her church, was an avid reader, and a devoted Detroit Red Wings fan since childhood. She cherished the many friendships she formed through her neighborhoods, churches and organizations. Those who knew her will remember her kindness, thoughtful nature, and the pride she took in her family.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 28, 2026 at First Presbyterian Church of Farmington, 26165 Farmington Rd., Farmington Hills, MI 48334 (corner of 11 Mile and Farmington Roads). An informal visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:30am and a luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Farmington, the Ezra Parker Chapter scholarship fund of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, or a charity of your choice.
