Sonia Sotenik Toundaian (GiGi), a beacon of warmth and wisdom, passed away on May 30, 2024, at the age of 91. Born in Bronx, NY to Ohannes and Azniff Khatchadourian on January 23, 1933. Sonia’s life was filled with love, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
It was in 1956 that Sonia's heart found its counterpart in Charles Toundaian. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love. Together, they raised three remarkable children: Diane, Peter and Susan.
Her children will forever cherish Sonia's stories, her independence and strength, her ability to stay on top of current events with a level of detail to have a valid and robust conversation. Her tremendous skills as a seamstress and her drive to always learn, read, and do puzzles, to keep her mind sharp as a tack, which she did until her last days.
Sonia's commitment was to her family first. If any ever said a disparaging word about her family, they would have received the wrath of Sonia. She will always be remembered for outgoing personality, strong positions in life and respect for others, and the quick wit that you saw immediately on your first meeting with her. Sonia seemed to have an innate ability to leave a lasting impression on everyone she met. She had a passion for Detroit sports and always supported U of M Football, the Red Wings, Tigers and Lions by watching the games whenever they were playing, but her favorite team would always be the New York Yankees.
Preceded in death by her devoted husband Charles (Chuck), loving parents Azniff & Ohannes Khatchadourian and her sister Lucille Karageozian. Sonia's memory is honored by: her children, Diane (Daniel) Fenech, Peter (Janine) Toundaian, and Susan (Donald) Turner; and her grandchildren, Jaclyn, Matthew, Samantha, Sydney, Adam and Melanie and great grandchild Madilyn.
